Helper updated to provide methods
loadUserPreference($preference,$user = false)
saveUserPreference($preference,$value,$user = false)
System currently only sets (doesn't even yet use)

The router was breaking the ability to set a vehicle as default, so have made adjustments in commit 587fd9a

The underlying project - Vehman - is essentially EOL, so no further work's going to be done on this component either (particularly as it's more than 1 major release behind the current Joomla version).
Closing outstanding issues as Won't Fix
